Taking this into account, the right form of protest is to grow beyond fasts & human chains to boycotting the companies & products that have investments in Sri Lanka. This is what Mr Pranab Mukherjee meant, while assuring that India will provide support in the rebuilding of Sri Lanka. Many Indian companies are aspiring to play the role of the American companies that are profiting from the reconstruction of Iraq. The Indian government is functioning with a focus on the benefit of Indian enterprises operating in Sri Lanka such as the – Marutis, Ashok leylands, Tata Teas, Hero Hondas & Airtels.
I wonder, if there can be any thing more useless than this. While the Indian Government is assisting Sri Lankan government directly and indirectly in this war, several people are putting forth their demands to the Indian government. Does India wish to evolve into such a haughty and imperious country? This is a question that needs to be introspected not just by the people of Tamil Nadu state, but by people from all other Indian states too. US can be wishful that the wars across the world continue, to sell its military hardware. USA could declare war on others to test its weaponry, before their shelf life expiration. Loyal than the King? Or is Rajiv’s ghost haunting them? However, the State Congress leaders are more vocal than the national leaders. While the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu Congress members might take individual stances on the Cauvery issue, they cannot do the same on the Eelam issue. In the Tamil Nadu state, if you look at the individuals who have taken a stance against the interests of the Eelam Tamils, you might infer one conclusion – ie, Jayalalitha, Subramanian Swamy, Cho Ramasamy, “The Hindu” Ram, Malan all belong to the same caste. Even popular Tamil Television Channels do not handle this issue with due prominence. On the Indian national level, the Television media seem to touch upon the Sri Lankan crisis “on the go” or, while there are no other issues to be broadcast. The uncharacteristic dark silence of the Indian Tamil writers or the so called intellectuals bothers me. May be they feel, they are better off not commenting on an emotional issue. To the best of my knowledge, the popular Tamil writers have not written anything of significance on the Sri Lankan crisis.
